土木インフラは、災害の復旧や防災対策など、我が国に必要な公共事業の分野です。
日本は急峻な地形と急流の河川が多く、回りを海に囲まれているため、災害が起きやすい特性を持っています。
そのため国は予算を掛けて、災害が起こりやすい地域や、港湾漁港施設の防波堤などを計画的に随時、補強してきました。
インフラはあまり目立ちませんが、地元の方々に安全と安心感を与える大切な事業といえます。
わが国の社会資本整備を進展させる必要性があった高度成長期は、公共投資が年々増加し、会社が継続して成長していった時期でした。しかしながら、国の財政事情の変化により、予算が年々削減され、一時期公共事業イコール悪というイメージも手伝って、われわれの業界にとっては苦労の多い時期が続きました。

昨今は震災復興の需要により、業界として持ち直しつつありますが、それ以前の10年間で業界全体が疲弊しています。震災復興の需要後、長期的には国の防災対策も縮小に向かうことが予想され、既存のインフラの維持・補修など、現在の施設を長く使う方向にならざるを得ません。
例えば下水道を全部取り替えるとすると莫大な予算が掛かるように、昭和の時代から50年以上かけて作ってきた防波堤や護岸を全部変えることは予算的に無理だといえます。そうなると今後の方向性として、維持･補修やメンテナンスへの取り組みが重要な課題になります。
