前日の欧米株式相場が軒並み下落した流れを引き継ぎ、売り先行で始まった。外国為替市場で円相場が１ドル＝105円台後半まで上昇し、企業の輸出採算が悪化するとの懸念も重荷になった。後場寄り後、断続的な売りに押されて日経平均の下げ幅は250円を超える場面があった。

半面、底堅さもみられた。日経平均は朝方、上昇する場面があり、大引けにかけても下げ渋った。

東証マザーズ指数は大幅続落した。終値は前日比115.13ポイント（10.33％）安い999.91だった。1000を終値で下回るのは４月７日以来約２カ月ぶり。下落幅は2006年７月18日以来、約10年ぶりの大きさとなった。
