17日の東京株式市場で日経平均株価は３営業日ぶりに反発し、前日比149円13銭（0.90％）高の１万6745円64銭で終えた。海外市場で１ドル＝99円台に上昇した円相場が一時101円台前半まで下落した。99円台の円高定着が回避できたとの安心感から、トヨタやパナソニックなど主力の輸出関連銘柄を中心に買いが入った。取引終了にかけては先物にまとまった買いが入り、裁定取引に絡んだ値がさ株買いが指数を押し上げた。日経平均は175円高の１万6772円まで上げ幅を広げる場面があった。

朝方は小幅安で始まった。前日の米株式相場が反落した流れを引き継いだが、浅川雅嗣財務官の円高けん制発言などを受け円が下落すると、主力株を中心に買いが優勢になった。規模別指数で時価総額が大きい30銘柄で構成する「コア30」が堅調に推移したことから、「海外勢が主力株に買いを入れている」（国内証券）との指摘が出ていた。一方、小型株指数は下げるなど大型株優勢の展開だった。
