19日の東京株式市場で日経平均株価は４日続伸し、前日比35円30銭（0.21％）高の１万6998円91銭で終えた。一時は心理的な節目となる１万7000円を上回る場面もあった。午前発表の中国の経済指標が市場予想に沿った結果となり、買い安心感が出た。

日本時間の11時発表の中国の2016年７～９月期の国内総生産（ＧＤＰ）は前年同期比6.7％増だった。市場予想をやや上回って中国経済の下振れ不安が薄れ、投資家心理が改善した。18日の米株式相場が、市場予想を上回る企業の16年７～９月期決算を好感して反発していたことも支援材料になった。

朝方は先週末からの上昇を背景に売りが先行し、日経平均は上げに転じた後も上値は重かった。節目の１万7000円を超えた水準で利益確定売りに押し戻される場面もあった。外国為替市場で１ドル＝103円台後半と円高・ドル安方向に傾いたのも足を引っ張った。20日午前に米大統領候補のテレビ討論会を控え、大引けにかけては様子見気分も強まった。

東証マザーズ指数は３日続伸した。終値は前日比10.73ポイント（1.13％）高い959.83だった。メタップスやブランジスタが上げた。ネットの動画配信のＪストリームに思惑買いが集まった。半面、モバファクやクラウドＷが下げた。
